Oma gave this recipe to Mark many years ago after she made them for Easter dinner and he really enjoyed them and wanted to make more. Her original recipe did not call for most of the spices, but we prefer them with it.
Ingredients
- 2 packets dry yeast
- 1/2 cup warm water
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 2 tsp salt
- 1/4 cup butter or margarine soft or melted
- 1 cup warm milk
- 2 eggs
- 5-5 1/2 cups flour
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1 cup currants or raisins
- 1/4 tsp Orange peel Optional
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg Optional
- 1/4 tsp cloves Optional
Servings: rolls
Instructions
- Place first 7 ingredients in mixing bowl in order given.
- Add half the flour and cinnamon and other spices; blend at medium low for 3 minutes.
- Stir in currants and remaining flour to make a very stiff dough.
- Dough may be kneaded 3-5 minutes if desired.
- Cover; let rise in warm place 45 minutes until doubled.
- Divide dough in half.
- Divide each half into 12 equal pieces.
- Shape into smooth balls.
- Place 2 inches apart on greased cookie sheets.
- Cut a cross on top with sharp knife.
- Cover, let rise until light and doubled in size, about 45-60 minutes.
- Bake at 375 for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
- Cool.
- Either pipe a cross on top or glaze the top with vanilla glaze.
