Aunt Bonnie made us these cookies for the first time nine years ago. She told us that “if you break them into three pieces without talking, your wish comes true”. It has never been proven, since my kids can’t stop talking long enough to break a cookie into three pieces 🙂
Ingredients
- 1 c butter softened
- 1 1/2 c sugar
- 1 egg
- 2 Tbl molasses
- 1 Tbl Water
- 1/2- 1 tsp grated orange peel
- 3 - 3 1/4 c flour
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp ground ginger
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg
- Icing
Icing
- 1 c confectionery sugar
- 1/2 tsp vanilla
- 1-2 Tbl milk
Servings: dozen depending on size
Instructions
- Cream butter and sugar until fluffy.
- Add egg, molasses, water and orange peel, mix well.
- Combine dry ingredients and add to creamed mixture, beating well.
- Cover and chill at least 2 hours.
- On lightly floured (or powdered sugared) surface, roll dough to 1/8 inch.
- Cut into desired shapes and place on ungreased baking sheet.
- Bake at 375 degrees for 6-8 minutes until lightly brown.
- Cool on wire racks.
- For icing, combine sugar, vanilla and milk to achieve a drizzling consistency.
- Ice as desired.
