I never really liked split pea soup, but Allan mentioned that he liked it a few months ago. So, I decided to try it again. Surprise! I liked it 🙂 Proof it is always good to keep trying new things.
Ingredients
- 2 Tbl unsalted butter
- 2 large onions chopped
- 4 large carrots diced
- 1 cup celery diced
- 1 tsp pepper
- 2 cloves minced garlic
- 1 pound dry split peas
- 2 bay leaves
- 6 cups ham broth
- 1 cup diced ham
- 1 tsp paprika optional
Optional garnishes for serving.
- .25 cup sour cream
- .25 cup green onions diced
- 1/2 cup sharp cheddar shredded
- Franks Red Hot Sauce

Instructions
- Saute onions, carrots, celery and garlic in butter until soft.
- Season with pepper.
- Sort and rinse split peas.
- In stock pot, add sauted vegetables, split peas, ham broth and bay leaves.
- Simmer until peas are tender, approximately an hour.
- If soup is too thick, add additional broth.
- If desired puree with stick blender.
- Add diced ham.
- Season with additional salt and pepper if needed.
- Simmer another 15-20 minutes to blend flavors.
- Garnish as desired.
- Serve with corn chips, garlic bread and/or a favorite green salad.
Recipe Notes
OPTIONAL: Simmer on low in crock for 4 hours before adding ham. Then simmer another hour or so.
