We are studying world history and geography this year. As part of geography, we look for unique international recipes that we can try. While looking, I found a few recipes for “Moose Fart” no bake cookies. It seems they are from Newfoundland, but other places have similar recipes with different names.
These are good, but very sweet. We tried adding more graham cracker crumbs and less coconut, but they were dry and not so good. They would be extra good with nuts, so we added optional pecans to the recipe. When we shared the original recipe with friends, they disappeared very quickly.
To make the chocolate version, check out the notes.
- 1 14 oz can sweetened condensed milk
- 1/4 c melted butter
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 1/2 c dried unsweetened coconut fine or medium cut
- 1/2 c diced pecans optional
- 1 1/2 c graham cracker crumbs
- 1 1/2 c chocolate chips mini preferred
- Additional graham crumbs for rolling the cookie balls.
- Melt the butter and and combine with the sweetened condensed milk and vanilla extract until well blended.
- Add the graham crumbs, coconut, (pecans if using) and mini chocolate chips.
- Mix to combine well.
- Refrigerate at least an hour, or up to overnight.
- Using a scant teaspoon of mixture, roll into small balls.
- Roll the balls in additional graham crumbs and once again chill until firm.
- Refrigerate in air tight container.
For the chocolate version;
Add 1 tablespoon cocoa powder to the dough. Replace chocolate chips with white chocolate chips. Before rolling in graham crackers, add 1/2-1 tsp cocoa to crushed crackers.
We did not try, but some optional replacements.
- Mini M&M's for the mini chocolate chips.
- Use rice crispy cereal instead of crushed graham crackers for the inside and then crush some rice crispy cereal for the outside.
- Add 1 Tbl cocoa powder to mixture and roll in cocoa powder
- Melt chocolate chips with butter and add white chocolate instead
- Be imaginative.
